Nightly Homework
I do not believe in homework for homework’s sake. I do believe in giving children enough experience and practice so that they can learn the concepts taught in school, and retain them. In order for us to store information in our long-term memory we need to see and work with new concepts repeatedly. So often when children are learning new concepts they need one-on-one time with an adult to be able to understand and grasp the material. Even though I make every effort to do this in the classroom some children need additional guidance. As part of your child’s team (student, teacher, parents) you will be given special opportunities to work with your child on his/her homework. A small homework packet will be sent home every Thursday. Your child will have a full week (Thurs. to Thurs.) to complete and turn in the packet. If your child finishes the packet early and the work is his/her “Personal Best,” he can turn it in before the due date. Please help your child with the homework. You may work with your child any way you see fit: teaching, guiding, discussing, and monitoring. Since the children benefit from immediate feedback, I am asking you to please correct the homework with your child and initial it. Also, if your child does not finish his class work during the school day, it will become part of his/her daily homework. Looking through your child’s “Teacher/Parents Communicator” (Red Take Home Folder) nightly will allow you to see if your child is keeping up with his/her class work.
In addition to the weekly Homework Packet your child will be asked to read for 10-20 minutes nightly. Having a discussion with your child about the books read will help with their comprehension. Don’t forget to fill out the Reading Calendar each night. Prizes are awarded to those who meet the monthly goal.
